Cypress Systems, Fresno, CA, has received independent GRAS (generally recognized as safe) designation for its flagship product, SelenoExcell high selenium yeast. The assessment included consideration of the manufacturing process and quality assurance procedure used to produce the subject material with its associated specifications. Results from animal testing that address the safety and/or toxicity of SelenoExcell and other chemical forms of selenium were considered, as were the various clinical testing results and documented human experience investigations that have been published over the past four decades. Up to 150 micrograms per day of the selenium content can be safely applied to various food categories.
